This blog began as documentation of my journey into formal ministry. Now that I have received a call it will continue to function as a place for me to address concerns, celebrations and anything else that might catch my fancy. Please remember to "Be A Blessing To Someone Today"! God Bless, Roy

Funeral for Jeff Gorden, July 9th 2016 - Woodlawn Christian Church, Lake City, IA
Order of Service – Funeral for Jeff Gorden – July 2016
Prelude: Evelyn Johnson
Procession: You Should Be Here – Cole Swindel
Call to Worship:
Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written,
“For your sake we are being killed all day long;
we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered.”
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:35-39 (NRSV)
Greeting:
We have come together within the strengthening fellowship of friends and family:
to praise God for the life of Jeffrey Allen Gorden;
to share our grief with God and with one another;
to reaffirm our faith in God's unfailing goodness;
to hear again God's promise of resurrection;
and to commend Jeff to God's everlasting care.
Special Music: Not a Day Goes By – Lone Star
Opening Prayer:
Gracious God, your love endures forever. Your faithfulness is unfailing and all your promises are true. The movement of your Spirit is evident even in our darkest moments. Attend to us now in our grief as we trust you will.
Speak words of comfort to our hearts. Open us up to receive your hope.
O God of grace and glory, we remember before you this day our brother Jeffrey.
We thank you for giving him to us, his family and friends,
to know and to love as a companion on our earthly pilgrimage.
In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn.
Give us faith to see death as the gate of eternal life,
so that in quiet confidence we may continue our course on earth,
until by your call, we are reunited with those who have gone before;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Hymn: How Great Thou Art – No. All
A reading from the Old Testament:
Psalm 91
Assurance of God’s Protection
1 You who live in the shelter of the Most High,
who abide in the shadow of the Almighty,
2 will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress;
my God, in whom I trust.”
3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
and from the deadly pestilence;
4 he will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
5 You will not fear the terror of the night,
or the arrow that flies by day,
6 or the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
or the destruction that wastes at noonday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
8 You will only look with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.
9 Because you have made the Lord your refuge,
the Most High your dwelling place,
10 no evil shall befall you,
no scourge come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways.
12 On their hands they will bear you up,
so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the adder,
the young lion and the serpent you will trample under foot.
14 Those who love me, I will deliver;
I will protect those who know my name.
15 When they call to me, I will answer them;
I will be with them in trouble,
I will rescue them and honor them.
16 With long life I will satisfy them,
and show them my salvation.
A reading from the New Testament:
2 Corinthians 4:16-5:9 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
Living by Faith
16 So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. 17 For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, 18 because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.
5 For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this tent we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling— 3 if indeed, when we have taken it off we will not be found naked. 4 For while we are still in this tent, we groan under our burden, because we wish not to be unclothed but to be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 5 He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.
6 So we are always confident; even though we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord— 7 for we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 Yes, we do have confidence, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 9 So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.
Hymn: Shall We Gather at the River No. All
Message: Pastor Roy Karlen – Woodlawn Christian Church
Jeffrey Allen Gorden was born May 27, 1968, in Lake City, IA and passed away June 30th , 2016 at the age of 48. Jeff was baptized here at Woodlawn Christian Church in this baptistry on April 13, 1980, by the Reverend Chris Nettles. Right here he professed and publicly displayed his faith in his Lord Jesus Christ.
Jeff leaves behind 9 grandchildren along with another on their way, 5 children, Jobi, Tory, Caleb, Jessica and Zach, his brother Scott and sister Kim, and his parents Jesse and Jeannie. Jeff has gone to join in heaven his son Trevor and his grandparents.
I never had the opportunity to meet Jeff, but if he was anything like his mom and dad he must have been a wonderful person. To all the family gathered here today if you are fortunate enough to call Jesse & Jeannie your father and mother, grandfather and grandmother or even great-grandfather and great-grandmother, you are among those richly blessed. Jesse and Jeannie are the very salt of our Lord's earth and God loves them as do I.
Later several of the family and friends will be invited forward to reflect upon and remember Jeff's life and so rather than my eulogizing Jeff I will instead bring to you a message from our mutual creator. A message from our God.
On June 30th, Jeff and a co-worker were both killed in a terrible work related accident, at times like these we are left with the lingering question in our minds... “why”. I have heard Jeff's parents Jess and Jeannie, along with many other members of the family, ask this very question over and over this last week and a half. Why, why, why... why God?
Far, far greater minds than I, have attempted to tackle this simple but monumental question.... why God? I approach this topic with no small amount of humility and an understanding of my insignificance in attempting to lend my voice among those who are or were giants among Theologians.
But, I come to this question of why, with my many years of studying not only scripture but studying about scripture, with my many years of individual study with my late mentor the Reverend Doctor Jesse Brown, a Duke professor of Old Testament Theology, a Dead Sea Scrolls Scholar, a man who was an intimate friend with the late Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. and a man who himself was an early voice in the Civil Rights Movement. I add to this my own life experiences in my 56 years on this earth, and a relationship with my Lord that has often been extremely contentious, a relationship where I have never shied from asking why, and even for many years being angry with and denying God. Through all of this, I have arrived at a relationship with my God where I am at peace with His being and perhaps more importantly at peace with my own being and my place in His Kingdom. So much at peace with God that I felt His calling to become one of His advocates in this world.
Why, why God... why do the innocent and the very young have to perish. Why... just when someone seems to finally have their life in order do they suddenly have a terrible accident and pass away. But, the why's don't stop at death, it can be why did the beautiful young girl have to have an accident and become disabled... why... why... why. The why's simply.... never end...
Often when confronted with this difficult and frankly extremely uncomfortable question we ministers as well as nearly all lay people will just say something along the lines of “We don't understand God's ways” or worse yet “It is all part of God's plan”. I'll be honest with you, I cringe when I hear these statements... it doesn't paint a very pretty picture of the God that I love with all of my being.
We don't understand God's ways... this I agree with but not in the fashion that most make this statement are implying. We don't understand God because He is God... and He as God sees the big picture, the whole picture, and we're here living in a snapshot of our life at any given moment. As we get older we hopefully gain understanding of the snapshots that have gone on ahead and can apply that knowledge to the moments to be photographed still ahead, but none the less, we live in a very finite time frame in this world. God of course, is infinite, His being and understanding is obviously different than our own.
Let me try to share with you a little insight that I have gained from the snapshots of my life thus far. We don't understand God's ways partly because God is entirely a being of Love, Grace, and Forgiveness. We as imperfect, egotistical, envious and often angry humans have difficulty grasping even for a moment the depth of the love that God has for His children and His creation. God loves each of us so very much and all that He desires is a relationship of mutual love with each of us. But, He does not and will not force us to come to Him and love Him. Rather, His desire is that we of our own free-will come to love Him. God is always in pursuit of us, trust me He chased me, and chased me. I tried my best not to love Him, but ultimately I found that I could not resist. We are all granted this “free-will”, this liberating yet terrifying freedom which theologians have discussed for many, many centuries. God gave us each free-will to decide for ourselves if we wished to love God... if we wished to have a relationship with Him. This free-will though had to by virtue of it's fully being free-will... it had to spill out into every aspect of our lives. We as autonomous beings and not biological robots can and do make thousands if not millions of decisions each and every day.
Most of the time these decisions are benign, but sometimes we make a very bad decision and it can prove disastrous for us as well as for others. Back in November of 2014, near Humboldt, NE a young 16-year-old teen was killed in an automobile accident. Now this young man was a good student, a popular youth in the community and he was a hard worker; working on a Dairy Farm even though he was a 'town kid'. Early one morning on his way home from milking he either fell asleep or was just so groggy that he ran a stop sign and was struck by a semi and died at the scene. He was active in the area youth group of the local Christian Church which is Pastored by my friend Howard Blecha. The youth were all in shock and of course the question of why, why would God do this, kept springing up on their dialogues on Facebook. I choose to address this concern for them in a post on my blog and once the teens in that area started to share the link it blew up to several thousand views within hours. It didn't go truly viral, but rather almost all the views seemed to be coming from that general geographical area.
The gist of the blog post was that God does not venture to further his Kingdom by the death of a 16-year-old boy. God did not kill that youngster. Unfortunately, the young man made a decision to drive when he was simply too exhausted to drive safely. A decision that not only impacted his life but the driver of the semi-tractor, along with an elderly driver whose pickup was struck by the wreckage, all of the EMT's, the medical staff, and ultimately the youth that knew the boy and questioned his death.
God, did not kill that boy... but what God did do, was to use the situation to direct my friend Howard and others to minister to the area youth. To hopefully, expose to them the radical love that our Lord has for each of us. To use Howard's loving and steadfast embrace to convey to them the strength and glory of God. God also directed me to pen that blog post which apparently by the number of views and the number of shared links, must have meant something to some of the youth. Though none of them posted comments on the blog, I did receive e-mails from a number of youth and subsequently corresponded with them.
In both the Gospel of Luke and Matthew, we read these words spoken by Jesus.
Luke 13:34 (NRSV)
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!
This verse and others speak to God's allowing us free-will and to His dismay and disappointment when we fail to respond to his Love held out for us. God wishes to cover us with His 'wings' just as it says here in Luke and Matthew as well, and as it says in Psalm 91 verses 3 & 4 which I read earlier:
3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
and from the deadly pestilence;
4 he will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge
Unfortunately, as Luke and Matthew convey... we don't always respond to God's love. We all too often make bad decisions and walk away.
But if we're attentive and tuned into our relationship with God, He will use us to further His Kingdom and minister to His children. All those ladies in the church kitchen that are busy preparing desserts for us for after the service, they've responded to God's call, Jim back there on the sound board is an advocate of God's love, Evelyn here on the organ has responded to God's call and came to minister to you all today, Keith Lampe is a true symbol of the love of God calling to his grieving children, God's love is in all those here who have turned out to support and hold this grieving family.
I shared a point with Jess and Jeannie the other night and I will emphasis it to you all today. Our need to come to God in love and relationship out of our own free-will is such an extremely important element of our salvation that God has allowed all of the other bad decisions that arise out of free-will to enter into this world and our existence. All of the evil that is allowed to be manifested in the hearts of man are a result of the absolute need for us to individually make our commitment to our all loving and all gracious God. This is how important it is for us to love God of our own accord... think about that folks... this love for God is so vitally important. Through all of what life throws at us because of our free-will and because of others free-will in turn... know that your God loves you.
God does not cause tragedy to happen... but what He can do and what He will do if we are attentive is to show to us in these times of darkness and dis-pare His love for us. Good can come out of tragedy and even evil acts if we are determined to do good in the name of God.
God did not cause the accident that killed Jeff, human error resulting in a mechanical failure did, God did not wish for Jeff to die that morning...
But what God has done is to demonstrate to each of you His love for you all... He has reached out to you and brought you here to His house, where if you allow Him he will put His arm of comfort around you and bear you up in your time of grief. Just as Christ grieved over the death of Lazarus, God grieves over the death of Jeff.
God has shown his concern for your grief, and unfailing love for each of you, by the hands of those ladies in the kitchen making preparations and don't forget Virgil Pettit working with them, few people are a greater demonstration of God's love and devotion than Virgil, God has shown his love to you through Jim Bruce who is here to run the sound system, He's shown His love for you and countless others through the years by the ministry of Evelyn behind the keyboard, her music has soothed the soul of uncountable grieving hearts, through Keith Lampe who we praise God for sending to this community, through all of you who have answered the call to be here today for this family in need in this darkened hour... and least of all He has not demonstrated his love for you but rather has emphatically and unwaveringly declared His love for each and everyone of you by calling me here to be His voice today.
As His advocate and voice, I declare to you all unequivocally........ God LOVES you.....
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Eulogies and Reflections:
At this time I would like to call forward Scott Gorden, Amber Hawkins, Mark Kutz, Brandon Childs and Kim Shugar to share some of their memories of Jeff with us.
Closing Prayer:
On June 30th, 2016 God expressed His love for Jeff by opening His arms and the Gates of Heaven to welcome him home. On June 30th Jeff also was able to finally pick up his little boy Trevor and carrying him once again. Praise God for the life of Jeffrey Allen Gorden.
The family invites you all to join them in further celebration of Jeff's life and a time of shared remembrances and closure, by joining with them at a reception in the Church's fellowship hall immediately following the service of committal at the Lake City Cemetery.
Let us pray:
O God, our Strength and our Redeemer, Giver of life, and Conqueror of death, we open our hearts to you just as we are. We celebrate your gift of life freely given but are grieved by a sense of loss in the face of death. The love which binds us to one another leaves us aching as ties are broken. Accept our tears as emblems of devotion, and transform them into waters of life to nourish us in the days ahead.
We trust you. We love you. We know in Christ that your love is everlasting. Nothing can separate any of us from your abiding care. With you is eternal life.
With confidence, we now entrust Jeff to your unfailing love and overflowing goodness. Through the power that raised Christ from the dead to live eternally with you, lift up this, your servant, to life fulfilled beyond our imagining. We give you but your own, enfold him in your everlasting arms, hold him for he is your child.
Now strengthen us, through the gift of your Spirit, to face into the future with confidence that you stand with us. Grant that the changes of life may leave us stronger as we journey through life.
Reassured of your abiding presence, help us to knit more firmly the ties that bind us one to another. Renewed by your love, help us to love in ever larger circles so as to embrace your people everywhere till at last we are all united eternally through Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
Benediction:

Committal Service:
We selfishly want to hold on to Jeff. It brings great pain to let go. Living in the resurrection hope of our Lord Jesus Christ, in the trust of a loving God and in the promise of eternal life, we now commit his body to its place of rest. We will continue to mourn our loss, but his laughter will warm the kingdom of God. We will continue to love Jeff, but God will now take care of him. We will continue to carry Jeff in our thoughts, but he will be kept safe in God's hands. Receive him in the arms of your mercy, O God, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of all your saints.
Hear now a reading from the 103rd Psalm:
As for mortals, their days are like grass; they flourish like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more. But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him.
Let us pray:
In sure and certain hope that, as Christ lived and was the first to rise from the dead, we too shall have new life and will join our heavenly Father along with all the saints in a new and better place. We therefore, commit our brother Jeff to the earth from which he was made, and lay to rest this mortal body that it might put on immortality. The Lord bless him and keep him; the Lord make his face shine upon him and be gracious to him; the Lord look upon him with favor and give him eternal peace. Amen
Hear now a reading from the 1st Chapter of 2nd Corinthians:
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all consolation, who consoles us in all our affliction so that we may be able to console those who are in any affliction with the consolation with which we ourselves are consoled by God.
Believing in the Resurrection to eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ, we now entrust Jeff Gorden to the care of Almighty God and we ask Our Father to open the doors to his mansion and lead Jeff to the room made ready just for him. As we now commit his body to its final resting place; we commend his spirit to its new home. Rest eternal grant him, and let God's light perpetual shine upon him. Almighty God, as you once called our brother Jeff into this life, so now you have called him into life everlasting.
Let us pray together the prayer that our Lord taught to us............
This concludes the graveside services.
May the Lord bless you and keep you and may His strong arms uphold you and comfort you in the days, weeks and years ahead. Go in His peace.

Prayers and video of Oct 25th Sermon
Well, as I sit to write this blog post, autumn is certainly in the air; actually, scratch that winter is in the air. It is down right COLD outside and the wet weather isn't helping the comfort level one tiny little bit. Fall is one of my favorite times of the year, however, like so many I don't enjoy what is just around the corner. I do love living in the mid-west where we have all four seasons, it's just that I'd like spring and fall to take up about 40 of the 52 weeks, give summer 11 and we'll forfeit one to winter, preferably the week of Christmas. Of course I don't want any blizzards or anything just some idyllic snow fall to punctuate the feeling of Christmas. As soon as Christmas has passed the temps can shoot back up to the 60's and I'd be just content. Oh well, one can dream.
I'm looking forward to my first winter here in Lake City, though the weekly drive back and forth to Omaha could be interesting at times. I really don't know how much longer we'll keep up this routine, but it is the norm for the time being and I will just do what needs to be done.
It's been a difficult last couple of weeks for the Karlen family, we had to put down our oldest cat 'Jade' a couple of weeks back and just this week we had to put down our other little boy 'Mister Tibbles' (Tibby). Jade was an old man and along with having gone blind his kidneys were failing, Tibby had a tumor in his stomach which was growing rapidly. We knew that they were both failing and honestly it was just a contest to see who lasted the longest. Ultimately it came down to when Gail was ready to let each of them go. They were both her 'boys' and she loved them dearly. It's been especially rough for her.

| Tibby helping out in Gail's sewing room. |
To top everything off, that same evening after having had to put Tibby down, Gail's mom Mary Alice had to be admitted to the hospital. She's developed several compression fractures in her spine and sad to report she is in considerable pain.
All prayers for healing and comfort for Mary Alice would be greatly appreciated.
I've also learned that whereas my Uncle Don is doing somewhat better it doesn't seem that he is ever going to recover fully after his most recent stroke. He's in the nursing home currently and it honestly sounds like that may well be where he'll be for the duration. This last week I also learned that my Uncle Doug has cancer and that he is hospitalized in Sioux Falls. The prognosis sounds extremely grim for Doug with cancer in his lungs and multiple other organs as well. Doug has been incarcerated for the last few years and was only recently released only to become ill and discover that his remaining days are extremely short.
So any prayers for both Don and Doug would also be greatly appreciated.
Well, that's enough sadness for one sitting, here is the video of the sermon from last Sunday morning (October 25th). I hope you enjoy it, thankfully we were able to get it all in one shot this week. Yay!
God's blessing to you all and remember to "Be a blessing to someone today!".
In His Grace,

If when reading Scripture.......
This past Sunday's Sermon was based on one of my own personal sayings... "If when reading scripture you never feel convicted, if you never see the hairy hand of God pointing a fat finger right back at you... well then you're not paying close enough attention."
Though scripture may 'convict' us, and God may 'judge' us, it is we alone who 'condemn' us. God does not wish to be separated from even one of His little ones. If we find ourselves in isolation from God, it is we who have condemned ourselves. This quote from C.S. Lewis pretty well sums it all up...
I've attached the video of the Sermon, it's in two parts once again and I apologize for that. I thought it was a pretty fair sermon and I hope if you take the time to listen that you'll perhaps gain something from it.
With that, I will let you all go, and retire for the evening.
Be a blessing to someone today!!
In Christ,
Roy

Sermon on Fear, October 4th - Pastor Roy Karlen at Woodlawn Christian Church, Lake City, IA

This past Sunday, I preached over "Psalm 91". The sermon focused on 'fear', we are often afraid in this life and repeatedly we are told to not be afraid and to have faith. Well, the problem with that is, as I outline in the sermon that faith is much like courage. Courage is when you are afraid and you continue forward and do what must be done regardless of your fear. Faith is much the same, regardless of our human fear and apprehension, we step forward with faith in our Creator that no matter the outcome, it will all work out just fine. Faith can move mountains, not because we are without fear, but because God is there with us aiding us in the journey.
I hope you enjoy the sermon.........

Sermons September 20th and 27th, 2016 = Woodlawn Christian Church, Pastor Roy Karlen
My sincerest apology for being so far behind on blogging. We've been a bit busy here at Woodlawn Christian the last couple of weeks. On September 26th and the 28th, we had funerals for two long term and devoted members. We were sad to say goodbye to Georgia Pierce and Marj Cunningham. Both of these ladies had been in nursing care away from Lake City for a fair while and I had never actually met either of the women. It's difficult to plan a funeral for someone you have never met, but that is so often the role that we as ministers are asked to play. Both services went well and all of us here at Woodlawn continue to pray for peace and comfort for the families. God is our refuge and our constant source of strength.
I will be writing another post later today with the sermon from this last weekend, so for now I'm going to sign off with God's blessings to you all.
Be a blessing to someone today!
Roy
Here is the video of the Sermon from September 27th.
Below is the video of the Sermon from September 20th. It's in 4 parts because the camera was giving Spencer fits as he was trying to record the sermon.
Prayer of Saint Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.
O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life.

Woodlawn Christian Church Sesquicentennial Celebration 9/13/15

| Sign in front of the abandoned Lohrville Christian Church Lohrville, Iowa |
We had a good turnout for the service and it was a great event. Originally, we'd hoped to worship outside that morning, but it was a bit too cool for some of the members so we opted to stay in the Sanctuary. After the service, we of course had a potluck luncheon. The Church provided the meat and buns and the side dishes were all provided by the members of the congregation. As always, it was a great feast and I for one certainly ate far, far too much food.
Julie Gibson our area Associate Regional Minister, was here at Woodlawn Christian in order to join in on the festivities. It was great to have Julie here with us again, she has been such a steadying force for the church as it went through it's long and frustrating search for a new minister; and we're very happy to maintain that relationship with her now that hopefully things are off on a more stable footing.

We continue to gather details as more folks are discovered who remember the burial of the capsule. Just this morning Evelyn Johnson told me that her husband Darryl believes he remembers where it is buried. Darryl is recovering from an illness right now and hopefully he'll soon be strong enough to come to church and point out the exact spot. We haven't given up hope of finding the capsule quite yet. Another individual was able to tell us that it's buried in an old metal ice cream bucket. Hopefully, we'll be lucky and the metal won't have completely corroded away after forty one years of being buried.
I've attached to this post the video of the Children's Sermon above, along with the video of the Sermon itself which is linked directly below.
The photo of the sign at the very top of the blog today, is the sign that sits in front of the old Church of Christ in Lohrville, IA. The building is no longer being used as unfortunately the congregation voted to close a number of years ago. The building and the land belong to the Region and just yesterday I was successful in purchasing the sign from the Region. We will be moving the sign over to Lake City in the near future. There will be no restoration to the sign as it's in a magnificent state of weathering as it currently is. We will investigate how to keep it from deteriorating any farther while still keeping it's absolutely beautiful state of aging intact. I just love this old sign and I'm so very excited that the Church Council went along with their crazy Pastor and allowed me to negotiate for it's purchase. It's wonderful that this old sign can once again serve a Disciples of Christ Church in the nearby area.
As always, I thank everyone who has wandered through this humble little blog and I hope you've found something enjoyable or perhaps something useful to you in your spiritual journey. May the good Lord bless you and guide you along your path.
In Christ,
Roy

Sermon 9/6/15 - "Those Difficult Verses in Scripture"
![]() |
| Trinity Lutheran Church, Reliance, South Dakota |
This past Sunday's sermon covered the verses found in the Gospel of Mark 7:24-30.
Mark 7:24-30
24 From there he set out and went away to the region of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know he was there. Yet he could not escape notice, 25 but a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him, and she came and bowed down at his feet. 26 Now the woman was a Gentile, of Syrophoenician origin. She begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. 27 He said to her, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.” 28 But she answered him, “Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.” 29 Then he said to her, “For saying that, you may go—the demon has left your daughter.” 30 So she went home, found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.
These verses are some of those that make one want to say "really Jesus, seriously...". They're difficult because of course Jesus sounds like... well like a jerk to be honest. In my sermon, I encouraged everyone to not take the easy way out of this problem. The easy way out of course is the all too common and wrong in my opinion, statement that "Jesus is just testing the woman", I'm afraid it's not that easy nor that painless.
We need to bear in mind that the Gospel of Mark is (of the four canonical gospels) the one where we find the most 'human' Jesus. As I say in the sermon, here we find Jesus letting his 'human' show. It may be a more difficult reality for us, but ultimately it also speaks more to us as human beings. Here we find a Jesus that is also human, one that we can relate to far better than we are used to being able to.
Well, that's all I'm going to say about it... to find out more you'll just have to watch the video and hear the sermon.
As always please remember to "be a blessing to someone today!"
In His Love and unending Grace,
Roy
PS: This coming weekend we will be celebrating our 150th 'birthday' for the congregation here at Woodlawn Christian Church. We're all very excited and looking forward to having an outdoor service and then a picnic afterward. One of the other things that we're doing to celebrate is collecting items to bury in a 'time capsule' to be exhumed in the year 2040. This evening while I was getting ready for my workout the doorbell rang and I found Lonnie Daisy at the front door. He had just found out tonight from his younger brother that the Vacation Bible School class back in the summer of 1974 had buried a time capsule in the yard near the Chapel. Lonnie had come down to look near where his brother told him it was buried and not too far away he discovered a rock just showing out of the ground near the base of an old tree that many of the old vbs classes had taken their class photos in front of.
Long story short, not many people knew of this 'time capsule' being buried and even fewer are still members. We'll be investigating further and hopefully, we'll find this long forgotten 'time capsule' it will be great to see what a group of youngsters felt they wanted to leave for the future. It's been buried in the Church lawn for 41 years and if Lonnie hadn't mentioned to his brother that we were getting ready to bury another time capsule, this one might have remained there for only God knows how many years.
I'll report back...

Installation Service - Woodlawn Christian Church
This past Sunday marked my official installation as the settled pastor here at Woodlawn Christian Church. It was a great service and I thank Julie Gibson for coming and assisting with the event. Julie is on the Regional staff and worked with the Search Committee for all the many years that it took for the search process to come to completion. The church endured a much longer process than normal and Julie's kind assistance and guidance has been richly appreciated by everyone here at Woodlawn CC along with myself.
I was pleased to have a number of my family and friends make the trip to Lake City for the service. My brother Merrill and his wife Karen, Susan Gillies (Past Executive Minister for the American Baptist in Nebraska), Kathy Brown (my late mentor Jesse's wife), Bob Molby (my current mentor) with his wife Marcie, my mother-in-law Mary Alice, Gail Ann and both Madeline and Creath were able to come as well.
Above is the video of the sermon which I gave during the program, and below is a video of Creath playing a violin solo of 'La Folia' by A. Corelli.
It was a wonderful service and I want to thank everyone at Woodlawn Christian for their faith in me and for calling me to come and reside and serve alongside them as their Pastor. Thank you to Julie for all that she's done and thank you to Susan, Kathy, Bob, Marcie, Merrill, Karen, Mary Alice, Gail, Maddie and Creath for all their love, assistance and support. Special thanks to Creath for playing his violin for the church. Everyone was blown away and just loved his playing, they're all anxious for him to come back and play for them again. Next time I will try and get him the music for the hymns that we'll be playing when he's here so he can be prepared.
May this blog post find all who read it fully blessed and well in our God's love and abundance.
Remember to "BE A BLESSING TO SOMEONE TODAY"!
In Christ Jesus,
Pastor Roy

Sermon from May 3rd - Woodlawn Christian Church
Well, here is the manuscript for the sermon that I gave here at Woodlawn Christian Church last Sunday (May 3rd, 2015).
Gail was here for the service along with my brother Merrill, Jr and his wife Karen. We all had a good visit over the weekend and went out to eat at the Carnegie Cafe here in Lake City on Saturday night. Hopefully, Jr and Karen will be able to come and visit us here on a regular basis. It's always great to see them and have some time to spend together.
I had an interesting week last week with getting to help out a stranded motorist, getting to go and visit with all of our elderly up at Shady Oaks (the retirement center here in town), and going to the Upper Midwest Disciples of Christ's Congregational Gathering on Saturday in Newton, Iowa. I'm looking forward to learning more about the Region which is made up of North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa. It's a huge territory and I feel sorry for the Regional Staff for all the miles they have to travel.
With that, I need to work on this weekend's sermon so I'll just post below the manuscript from this last week's sermon.
God's Blessings & Joy to you all,
Roy
Good morning once again. It was a beautiful week here in Lake City and it was an interesting week. We were able to help a stranded motorist, Leon took me out to Shady Oaks and introduced me to all of our members who are residents out there. Also Jeff and I yesterday spent the day in Newton, IA at the Disciples Congregational Gathering. I was able to finally meet in person Bill Spangler-Dunning and Julie Gibson who were instrumental in getting you all and myself introduced to one another.
Today we're fortunate enough to not only have my lovely wife Gail with us but also my older brother and favored sibling, Merrill Junior, or JR as I call him, is here with us as well. JR also brought along his long suffering... I mean, I mean..... his wonderful and loving wife Karen. In all honesty, Gail is the one that we could most accurately describe as long-suffering. Fortunately, for both of us Karlen boys we married up, so to speak. Remember as I mentioned last week, to not believe any stories about me that my brother might tell you. Unless of course they're stories where I was being good and behaving myself.

One of my earliest memories, I suppose I was about 4 or maybe 5 at the time, involves my older brother JR. Who is not only older than I but wiser as well... though I am better looking. Anyways, it was springtime and the snow was melting and the creek near our home was running high. JR and myself along with my older sister Laura were playing down by the creek. We decided to have 'stick races' in the creek; we'd throw a stick into the water and then run alongside and see who's stick got to a certain spot downstream first. Well, my stick got hung up along the bank and I went down to dislodge it... well of course I fell into the creek. My loving sister came and tried to pull me to safety, which ended up in me pulling her into the creek with me.
Well, now both of us are in the water and screaming for JR to rescue us. That is when my wiser and older brother said those words that we'd all do well to remember in times of trouble. He said to us “stand up”, for you see the water was only a bit over knee deep even on a little boy like I was at the time. And isn't it so often in life that when we're feeling swept away, that if we'd only just “stand up” we would find that the raging waters are only knee deep. Once we stood up, we just walked out of the creek.
Before we go any farther though, let's pause and go before the Lord in a moment of prayer and reflection.
Creator God, Father, Abba, as we turn to your Word let the light of your love, grace and being, be upon us here. That through your love for us we may grow in our relationship with the One who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. In the name of Christ Jesus our Lord we pray. Amen
Okay this morning we're going to be taking a look at some verses in the very short but extremely impactful book of 1st John. As I mention last week, 1st, 2nd and 3rd John are all believed to have been written by the same author, an individual who identifies himself in 2nd & 3rd John as 'The Elder'. The traditional opinion is that these letters or epistles were written by someone from the same community as the author of the Gospel of John. The date of these writings is unknown, but 1st John was alluded to in the writings of Polycarp in the year 135 ad. There is though, no known mention of 3rd John until the middle of the third century. But the writing style and vocabulary of the three speaks to them having a common author. Because of the strength of 1st John, all three epistles eventually made their way into the accepted canon.
With that, let's take a look at our scripture verses for today. If you have the 'Good News Bible' in front of you, you will find these verses on page 327 of the New Testament.
1 John 4:7-21
7 Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. 9 God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us. 13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.
14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father has sent his Son as the Savior of the world. 15 God abides in those who confess that Jesus is the Son of God, and they abide in God. 16 So we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them.
17 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness on the day of judgment, because as he is, so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love. 19 We love because he first loved us. 20 Those who say, “I love God,” and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. 21 The commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sisters also.
Okay, let's go through this now bit by bit...
Verses 7 & 8:
7 Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love.
Well... I don't know about all of you, but for me 'The Elder' has just put forth what we might call a 'Tall Order'.
1) Let us love one another
2) Love is from God
3) Whoever loves is of God & knows God
4) Anyone who doesn't love, does not know God
5) God is Love
One of my own personal sayings is this:
"If when reading scripture you never feel convicted, if you never see the hairy hand of God pointing a fat finger right back at you... well then you're not paying close enough attention."
I think these few verses do a pretty good job of convicting all of us. Is there anyone among us who can honestly say they are filled with love always? I doubt even the most kindly and gentle among us can live up to the standard that God has relayed to us through 'The Elder' here in 1st John. If we do not love one another, we do not truly know God. Fortunately for all of us, God loves us in spite of our struggles to love each other. The reality is that this is an area that we all need to work upon. And let us NEVER use the excuse that just because few can live up to this directive, that it means we do not have to try. We have declared to be followers of Christ, that means trying our very best to walk in His path. We are to try to model our lives and love around his example.
My late mentor Jesse used to say that Jesus never told anyone to worship him, but he did time after time tell people to follow him. Jesse was afraid that we've gotten so concerned with worshiping Christ, that we've forgotten to follow Christ. Heck, all too often we don't even try because after all Jesus was perfect. We fail to realize that following Christ is the most sincere and important way that we can worship him. Will we be able to do it perfectly, no I rather doubt we can... but we sure as the dickens need to give it our best shot.
Verses 9 - 11:
9 God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another.
God sent Jesus to live among us not because we loved him adequately, but because he loves us perfectly. He sent Him to us that we might live through him. Of course there is the obvious over-tone of the substitutionary sacrifice here but there is also the idea that I just was hitting upon. We live through Jesus because he has shown us the 'WAY' to live. As we likely all are aware the early 'Jesus Movement' back when it was just the newest Jewish sect was called 'THE WAY'.
We are called to live like Christ and the first step in that is to 'love one another'.
Verses 15 & 16:
15 God abides in those who confess that Jesus is the Son of God, and they abide in God. 16 So we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them.
To 'abide in' means someplace where we reside, where we live, where we are at home. If we love each other, then God lives in us and we live in God.
Verses 17 - 19:
17 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness on the day of judgment, because as he is, so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love. 19 We love because he first loved us.
Well that right there, is the basis for a pretty long sermon all on it's own. Maybe someday we'll come back to these verses. But for right now... let's just leave it that this pretty much dispels any idea of being scared into a relationship with God. A relationship with God is based on mutual love and not fear of any kind.
Verses 20 & 21:
20 Those who say, “I love God,” and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. 21 The commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sisters also.
If you were here with us last Sunday for the sermon, you might remember that I referenced the ending of the Gospel of John were John instructs Peter, and this directive is to all of us and not just Peter by the way... anyway he told Peter after asking
These verses here today are further proof-texts for my position that really the only way we can demonstrate our love for God is to love his children.
Here God is telling us that if we don't love our brothers and sisters 'who we have seen', that we can't truly say that we love God. Loving God means loving his creation and that include those among us that are seem to be unlovable. If we love God we will love our brothers and sisters, in spite of themselves and in spite of ourselves.
Let's please close with a prayer...
Dear Father, Abba, we come to you humbly, and freely accept the grace that you provide to us, grace given despite our sins against you in thought, word and deed. Lord, we thank you for your love and forgiveness and we cherish above all else our relationship to you, we also thank you for the relationships that you have blessed us with in our families, our friends, our fellow believers and all our fellow human beings. Truly, all are a part of your grand design and creation. Dear God, let us always be mindful of your directions in this world and let us be your hands and feet in this place. Father, we look forward to the day when through your direction all shall be reconciled to you and to each other.
We pray this in your most Holy and Blessed name, AMEN.
