The Calling of the First Disciples, according to John's Gospel

This past Sunday, January 14th, 2018, the sermon covered the calling of the first Disciples to Jesus' ministry.  This year the Lectionary steered us towards the calling as found in the Gospel of John.  I did also use the reading as found in Mark's Gospel for the 2nd Scripture reading.  I have included both scriptures below for anyone who wishes to read them.

The sermon is sixteen minutes in length so it's not a long listen.  I choose to hit upon the passage in three sections, with the kicker being the second block (from John 1:35-42).  Here the closer focused upon the 38th verse; When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, “What are you looking for?”

Each of us who has chosen to follow Jesus needs to ask ourselves the question that Jesus asked these first two Disciples; "What are you looking for", or as it can also be translated "What do you want".  I left the congregation with this question, I can't answer it for them, and I can't answer it for you either.  But, you need to ask yourself "What are you seeking" in following Christ?

It was about four o’clock in the afternoon. 40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated Anointed). 42 He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).

43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.” 46 Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47 When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael asked him, “Where did you get to know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.” 49 Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! 16 As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19 As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20 Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.
